Who is the Islander?

Now that I think about it, it was rather rude of me not to introduce myself to my fellow cyberspace-men. I go by the name "The Islander" as I am originally from the Caribbean and now residing in Cape Town, South Africa. John Donne once wrote a sonnet called .The poem contained the following verse: ....No man is an island, entire of itself...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." There are days that despite making a plethora of friends, or participating in a wide variety of activities that I still feel like an outsider. Superman arrived in a small space pod sent from planet krypton by his father, Jo-Rel in order to escape the imminent disaster that led to the destruction of Krypton. Practically the moment his pod crash landed in Smallville, the future superhero was headed for a life of unacceptance and incompatibility. Some of you that are reading this must be thinking, "What on earth are you talking about??", "Superman is great, he is awesome", "No one hated him." That’s true. Nobody hated him, yet when he made a mistake or was accused of not helping when he should have a notable line was drawn and his unacceptance grew. Yet despite that, the man of steel always felt compelled to help them as he regarded the human race as his fellow citizens. Now as an outsider, I to feel compelled to help society and that’s through doing things honorably, giving people when they need advice or if some mates are stuck in a rut, I simply offer a hand. In saying this, I hope to use this as a medium to address everyones problems and that I can find an adequate solution to them. I can't work miracles, but I can listen and read good (lol). What will you expect to see on this blog? Sports: Debacles, headlines, cricket selections, rugby controversies (Mr. Watson comes to mind) Social and celebrity news Or something that has been really bothering me as of late Requirements for reading the blog: Keep an open mind Submit as many comments as you so desire Look forward to it folks. Be sure to watch this space for upcoming posts. Regards, The Islander

The Islander Chronicles: First Post

Blogging is something im very new to.... as matter of fact, its something im completely foreign to. Since the advent of social media (e.g. Facebook and Twitter) I have grown accustomed to seeing individuals portray themselves in a different "light ". And no, Im not referring to studio light or individuals wrapping themselves in the confines of a makeup room... I am referring to completely reinventing your essence. Now you as the reader must be wondering, do we have an essence in digital media? Perhaps the digital stalwart that’s reading this post right now already realises that there is one. Let’s take the former premise into consideration. Assuming that you, I and the billions of social profiles that are in existence out there each have a virtual essence... would it mean that we can change this essence? The answer is no. Why you ask? It’s simple really. We are all different. Individually we are different in different stages of our lives. For example, your mom and dad are certainly not the same people that they were when they met each other. Madonna and Guy Ritchie certainly have changed in there respected careers (especially after the split). Our bodies change physically, our beliefs adapt to the entrance of newer ones. Taking all of these into consideration, our essence will still remain unchanged. Ask your mom and dad how they met, and in that very moment your mom will most likely describe to you the precise moment, place and items of clothing your dad was wearing at the time. Madonna and Guy Ritchie are still passionate about there careers making great song and movies respectively as it sprouts from their very essence. The truth is that social platforms offer an opportunity to various individuals to masquerade themselves as someone they are not. This can be both a good and a bad thing. This is potentially a great concept as those who are socially inept, like myself (kidding) can express themselves in a manner they are unable to in the real world. The situation festers into something worse. There are individuals out there who have created profiles so that can avoid the issue of dealing with problems or decisions themselves. How many of us really wanted to talk to that one girl in our business marketing class but just never had the courage to? So instead we just add them on Facebook and myspace only to hope that they eventually accept our friend request. As disturbing as it may look, this is far from abnormal. But on that note folks, I must bid adieu. Always remember that we can express ourselves in a multiplicity of ways, but in doing so we need to be true to ourselves. Stay cool fellow islanders, The Islander
